The other day I was talking to a really great couple I know. They’re like me, tight budget and a love for going out and having free dating adventures. So we swapped ideas of were to go for a good time in the city, for free.

Here’s how to find lots of fun, free things to do in your city.

First off, get over to the free city newspaper rack. Nearly every decent sized town has a free paper these days. In Toronto it’s Now magazine, in New York it’s The Village Voice. Metro magazine is almost in every city in north America as well.

When you have your free magazine, take a look at the daily events calendar. I have Toronto’s Now magazine and there are at least nine things I could do for free. The good thing about many of these is that they’re interesting and out of the norm.

For example today there is the University of Toronto’s farmer’s market. There’s no entrance fee, there are always free samples and it’s fun to take a look around at all the great handicrafts that people bring to fairs in the fall.

If you’re meeting someone from an online dating site for the first time, it’s good to meet in public. A farmers market is perfect because if things get boring you can just look at the fresh cheese for sale, if things are going good, he can buy you a bouquet of flowers.

If you don’t want to spend time looking in the newspaper, there are some city stand by’s that are always available. The Zoo is fun in the Spring and Fall, not as busy and they usually have a few free days every season.

The local museum is another great place for year round enjoyment. Every city museum has a time for people who can’t pay, so that everyone is exposed to culture. Call and find out what day and time it is. You might have to wait in line for a little while, but walking and whispering while gazing at gorgeous works if art is a great dating experience.

For an active couple, many yoga studios in the city offer a free class coupon on their websites. Nothing like breaking a sweat and getting grounded with a significant other. This is one that I’ve tried with a few gal pals in the past, it’s a great way to get to know people better.

I could list off many more adventures for you to choose from, but part of the dating experience is finding your own places to roam. From city parks to community volunteering, singles and couples on budgets don’t ever have to pay for a good time.

Have fun out there!
